at the tide

light and the memory of the sea

Concept

Year 2026

Small lights appear at our feet and slowly move across the garden. As the light rises and fades, we imagine a sea that is no longer visible here.

“at the tide” is an installation that explores the memory of a place and the passage of time in nature through changing light. Myorakuji Temple once stood by the sea in an area of Hakata called Oki-no-hama. Drawing on this history, the work brings the rise and fall of the tide and the movement of water into the temple grounds.

Small points of light spread across the ground, while thin lines of light rise among them. Colors on the trees also change. Together, these shifts in brightness and color reveal the depth of the garden. Lights that look like stars scattered on the ground begin to suggest the presence of water.

Patterns like moving water spread across the path, leading visitors toward the garden. Familiar ground, branches, and leaves become part of another landscape. Spending time within the rise and fall of the light connects the sea that once lay beside the temple with the garden before us today.
