Light reflected on a garden pond. Ripples left behind by swimming koi. These quiet scenes from the garden of Tsukiji Jisaku enter a room where guests gather before a meal.
We created two light artworks, “Mio” and “Mizuakari,” for a former photography studio transformed into a “modern tea house.” Together with the traditional Japanese interior designed by architect Kentaro Yamazaki, the works bring a sense of nature into the room through light, shadow, and natural materials.
“Mio” sits within a circular window. Two wooden panels with cut-out patterns slowly turn in front of soft light passing through Japanese paper. Their patterns overlap and separate, recalling the movement of koi and ripples on the water. The circular window becomes a place to watch time gently pass.
“Mizuakari” extends along the long wall. It was inspired by light from the garden pond reaching the veranda. Light moves across a wave-shaped plaster wall, slowly changing the shadows on its surface. Even here, a little away from the pond, the room holds a trace of light by the water.
The gentle changes in these two works quietly draw the eye, inviting guests to slow down and settle into the moment before their meal begins.
